KUWAIT CITY, Sept 22: Despite the political analysts’ prediction of its failure, the parliamentary request for an emergency session to discuss the government’s decision to lift petrol subsidies reached the required number of signatories and has been officially submitted to Parliament Speaker Marzouq Al- Ghanim.

MP Ahmed Al-Qudhaibi, who prepared and pushed for submission of the request, confirmed that a total of 35 MPs signed the petition as of Thursday morning and it was submitted directly to the Speaker later that day.

The request will be referred to the government soon in order to set the date for the session. Amongst the last MPs to sign the request was MP Abdullah Al-Edwani who disclosed that he was on holiday with his family and was forced to cut it short in order to sign the request. Like the rest of the MPs who signed the petition, Al- Edwani asserted that he will stand against any governmental decision which negatively affects the people. He pointed out there are many ways of addressing the issue without affecting the income of the public.

Meanwhile, the Administrative Court is looking into the lawsuit which has been filed against the government on the background of raising the fuel prices since the decision has not been published in the official gazette, the Kuwait Alyawm, reports Al-Qabas daily.

However, the Administrative Court during yesterday’s session gave time for the government to prove the decision was published in the official gazette.

In the meantime, the attorney from the Fatwa and Legislative Department has asserted that raising the petrol prices is deemed as a recommendation and therefore there was no need for its publication in the offi cial gazette.

However, the lawyers for the plaintiff, whose identity has not been disclosed, were quoted as saying it was a decision issued by the government and not a recommendation because it targeted the public. Speaking to the daily, a legal source said if the court regards raising the fuel prices was a decision, it can be declared null and void citing procedural flaws on the part of the government since it was not published in the official gazette.

In another development, MP Saleh Ashour asked Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yacoub Al-Sane if he has coordinated with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia regarding the issuance of entry visas for Bedoons and preventing them from performing the pilgrimage in Makkah this year. The MP urged the minister to follow up the issue and grant Bedouns the facility to perform their religious obligations, particularly Hajj.
