Thyroid, colon, breast cancer most common

MP Osama Al-Shaheen

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 2: Kuwaiti medical journals and reports from medical specialists have confirmed that the cancer rate in the country increased remarkably in the past three decades, indicating thyroid and colon cancers are the most common along with breast cancer for women.

This has prompted MP Osama Al-Shaheen to submit several queries to Health Minister Dr Bassil Al-Sabah on the number of clinics and hospitals fully equipped to receive a large number of cancer patients and if they are on par with international standards for Oncology.

The MP also asked about the number of cancer patients currently undergoing treatment in the country, medical researches and studies conducted to explain the rising cancer rate, plans to tackle this issue and public awareness campaigns if any.

Furthermore, MP Rakaan Al-Nusuf has forwarded queries to the ministers of Interior and Defense about the landmines and cluster bombs – remnants of the Iraqi invasion – scattered in the desert. He asked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lieutenant General Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah on reports published by local newspapers about the allocation of KD 1.2 billion for the removal of these landmines and cluster bombs. He pointed out there has been no tangible result until now considering the latest report of the Ministry of Interior revealed that around 307 emergency calls on sightings or incidents related to landmines and cluster bombs were received throughout the month of November until Dec 13. He inquired about the number of such reports including details regarding this issue since 1991 and the number of casualties.

He also requested for a detailed explanation of every procedure taken by the ministry after receiving an emergency call about a landmine or cluster bomb. He wants to know if the ministry is collaborating with its defense counterpart in this regard.

In his queries for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmed, the MP disclosed that he found out the ministry signed many contracts with foreign military forces and other concerned companies to help in the removal of these landmines and cluster bombs.

He said that the contract with a French company through a local sponsor cost the State 600 million Swiss francs, while another contract with a British company cost £59 million. He asked about the accuracy of these figures, number of contracts signed with foreign bodies and their cost, quantity of removed landmines and bombs since the invasion, and estimated number of remaining landmines and bombs. He added some sources claimed that the number of landmines, bombs and other explosives totaled 28,323 from March 1996 to November 2016
