KUWAIT CITY, Aug 10: The government seems to be uncertain and confused about the issue related to granting gasoline support to citizens, says Chairman of the Parliamentary Priorities Committee MP Yusuf Al-Zalzalah.

He cited reports that the government is studying the possibility of granting gasoline subsidy directly to citizens by giving them cash or fuel cards, but some ministers have rejected the idea. He pointed out this is a clear indication that the government is still confused when it comes to dealing with the current economic situation.

He asserted, “This issue is non-negotiable and there is no room for delays.” He stressed the need for the government to be committed to the agreement with the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee on the continuation of gasoline subsidy for citizens. He warned the government’s plan to lift this subsidy will negatively affect the Parliament-Government relationship. He hopes the government is aware that the MPs are taking this matter seriously and the citizens’ interest is a red line that nobody is allowed to cross. He argued the citizens must not bear responsibility for the inability of successive governments to improve the economic situation and diversify sources of income to cope with the fluctuating oil prices.

Meanwhile, MP Abdullah Al-Maayouf has unveiled his plan to grill Minister of Health Ali Al-Obeidi in case his ministry presses ahead with the signing of a contract for the management of Jahra and Farwaniya hospitals at a cost of KD 150 million each.

The lawmaker added that he received many calls from Kuwaitis undergoing treatment abroad, complaining about the delayed disbursement of their financial privileges. He pointed out this delay causes a major problem to the citizens undergoing treatment in other countries due to the high cost of treatment and other related expenses.

He wondered why the minister approved the overseas treatment applications of these citizens despite the lack of budget for this.
