KUWAIT CITY, May 22: The Ministry of Interior has begun a new approach and is believed to be focusing on the psychological factor to instill fear in the motorists and prevent them from committing violations by installing about 20 fake traffic cameras along the streets of Kuwait, reports Al-Rai daily.

Meanwhile, the security sources said that Interior Ministry has addressed the Ministry of Finance on the need to sign a contract for the operation and maintenance of traffic cameras, calling it an ‘urgent need’. The contract has to be renewed at the beginning of the current fiscal for a period of three years.

The source pointed out the technical committee has estimated the value of the maintenance and operation of traffic cameras contract at 8.3 million dinars for 3 years.

The source pointed out that the committee’s estimates were based on five main reasons including an increase in traffic cameras with 48 real and 20 fake complete with cabins, the increasing number of technical, administrative and operational staff in addition to the cost of maintenance and entering, processing and storing images of violations for 174 traffic control cameras.

This is in addition to providing an integrated backup system, as an alternative to the current system, which can be referred to in the event of any disruption to the current system and lastly taking into account the increase in the cost over the past years.
