Minister of Commerce and Industry cost set for domestics has resulted in ‘confusion’

KUWAIT CITY, April 12: The decision taken by Minister of Commerce and Industry Khalid Al-Roudhan to set a cost for recruitment of domestic labors has resulted in confusion in the market and increased number of complaints from citizens, reports Al-Qabas daily.

According to sources, several citizens complained that every time they visit domestic labor offices, they receive only one answer which is “No domestic workers available”. The managers of these domestic labor offices said the set prices do not match the cost for bringing domestic workers from overseas. The cost for hiring a Sri Lankan domestic worker is KD 1,100.

With such high costs, these offices will end up facing huge losses as they cannot recruit domestic workers at the cost defined by the ministry. This has left these offices with no option but to freeze their work. The sources said this decision is not correct, as the ministry did not consult the owners of domestic labor offices which are supposed to execute the decision.

They indicated, “If these prices are applicable, let Al-Durra Company provide domestic workers at that rate and meet the citizens’ demands”.

They insisted that it was better to enhance competitiveness rather than imposing fixed prices, adding that “Competitiveness will help increase the supply and will in turn reduce the demand, and then the prices will increase”. The sources said the decision is not in line with the free economy strategy adopted by the state
