KUWAIT CITY, June 22: The Criminal Court sentenced a person, who was accused of counterfeiting and smuggling 20,000 pieces of the 100 fils denomination, valued at KD 2,000 with the cooperation of a Chinese agent outside the country, to four-year imprisonment with hard labor. According to the case file, which is the first of its kind as it relates to an attempt to smuggle and pump counterfeit Kuwaiti 100 fils coin into the local market, the Director General of the General Customs Department issued directives to seize the counterfeit currencies worth KD 2000, contact the security services and finance sector of the state in order to notify them about the smuggling of counterfeit coins, and take the necessary legal and criminal measures.

The customs warehouse men at the Air Customs were suspicious of the content of a parcel weighing 127 kilograms that came from an Asian country through a shipping company. When they opened the parcel, they saw that it contained counterfeit 100 fils coins which seemed very difficult to be detected by non-specialists. By Jaber Al-Hamoud Al-Seyassah, Arab Times Staff
