I would like to confess that my heart was on the Republican candidate Donald Trump but my wallet was on the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

When the results were released, I had mixed feelings — my sadness was in conflict with my happiness — but I accepted the results under the belief that the President-elect Trump, despite all his recklessness, past history, financial and sexual scandals, electoral promises and weird threats both before and during the election campaigns, can perhaps make a good president for his country.

I believe his experience as a successful businessman and an outsider in the US political arena will enable him to confront issues more delicately in his considerations and will help him to be more careful in his statements and to show lesser adherence to his abnormal electoral promises.

The American people made sure their voices were heard and they chose Trump, not because they love him but because of their hatred towards the political establishment represented by Clinton — a personality and establishment the American people are fed up of — her indecision and the game she had been playing for more than three decades. If Trump were to contest with another personality such as Bernie Sanders, he would perhaps have been defeated.

Trump defied all odds. I think the “fear factor” played a key role in his victory — fear of unemployment, which has frustrated the American people, the fear over increase in crime rate and spread of drugs, fear of terrorism and migration of Muslims to the West and fear of emerging religious extremism. All these fears pushed the Americans into believing that Trump is more capable than Clinton in dealing with these fears.

I suppose fear of the deterioration of social values should drive the Kuwaiti electorate to cause an earthquake here similar to the American one by choosing new and different type of members of the August House. People are fed up of the stances and attitudes of most of the previous members, if not all of our politicians.

People deserve better representatives — progressive MPs who are far away from their political parties and religious, sectarian and tribal polarization. There are MPs who want to serve their country such as Ahmad Al-Fadhl, Ahmad Al-Qudhaibi, Riyadh Al-Adsani, Abdurrahman Al-Anjari, Gadeer Aseeri, Rakan Al-Nisf, Eman Hayat, Yousef Al-Fadhala, Yaqoub Al-Sane’ and of course Abdullah Al-Roumi and others from whom we expect a lot of good.

What we wish for is not an impossible dream. We are able to achieve this through positive and efficient participation in the elections to make sure the right people reach the parliament so that they can make the necessary changes.

Lest not we forget the statement by George Orwell — “People who elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims … but accomplices”.
