Logic, science and disease … life is short

Music, singing and dancing, among many other things, benefit physical and mental health and this was stated in a report published in Al-Qabas on a recent study by German researchers that showed that singing, dancing or playing a musical instrument is very beneficial, and similar to the effect of physical activity, pointing out that the study relied on a report from the World Health Organization that emphasized the importance of this in improving the quality of life related to mental health.

The study showed that music stimulates cognitive functions in people with mental illness, and singing, in particular, improves attention, episodic memory, and motor functions.

In an interview with the British Guardian newspaper, Professor Kim Cunio stated that the introduction of music into the life system relaxes individuals, which confirms the need to integrate it into the medical care system, and this means that it is preferable for hospital patients to hear quiet tunes to raise their morale in a positive way.

Insurance companies have already found that promoting life insurance policies is more effective when they present things in a positive way by posting a picture of a happy family smiling, rather than promoting the sale of the policy in a negative way by posting pictures of a terrible traffic accident.

Some associations also noticed this, as they had previously shown pictures of new converts to religion crying on the shoulders of preachers, so they changed them with pictures that showed the smile of the new believer.

The study raises questions about the nature of optimal musical interventions and the dosages to be used during clinical treatment. I also raise deeper questions about the reason for the warning — and not the hatred — of a large percentage of the clergy, Muslims in particular, for music, dancing and singing, which are in harmony with the natural human instincts, and I have no doubt that those who forbid them to others do not hesitate to enjoy them secretly, but they reject it for others on the grounds that it distracts from religious duties.

If we look at the response or reactions of man, from the moment of his birth until his death, we will find how happy the little child is with the movements of his mother dancing in front of him and seeks to imitate her, and how much a beautiful tone emanates from an instrument or hearing to a song and tries to repeat its words, how can these come and deprive us of enjoying innocent and useful human instinct?

Their attitude towards music, dancing and singing is unique in the world, and I do not think that there is a nation in which the clergy are so hostile to such matters, secretly or openly, and hate even laughter and seek forgiveness from their Lord if they increase it. If we leave a cheerful gathering, laughter rises in it, we often say “Oh God, make it good,” and we ask the attendees to conceal what they saw or heard from us.

Life is short and does not deserve all this seriousness and sullenness, and joy is part of the human personality, so let us enjoy our lives as we want, and keep away from us.
