Families affected when their breadwinner becomes ill

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 29: Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Anti-Smoking and Cancer Society and Head of the Cancer Patients Fund at the society Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh revealed that the number of cancer patients in Kuwait exceeds 2,800 annually, half of whom are residents, according to recent statistics, reports Al-Qabas daily. On the sidelines of an event held under the auspices of the Ministers of Social Affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh recently to celebrate the society’s award for the pioneering project in the field of social work in the voluntary sector in Kuwait, Dr. Al-Saleh said, “Families are affected when their breadwinner becomes ill. This negatively affects their lifestyle. Therefore, continuous support must be directed to patients.”

He explained that the assistance provided by the Cancer Patients Fund of the society ranges from providing monthly aid to the patients whose files the fund receives from the social service at the Kuwait Center for Cancer Control including their medical and social report to determine their condition from the specialist doctors, to developing a treatment plan.

The fund allows a cancer patient who has reached the late stages of his disease to travel to his country to be among his family with the fund bearing all the costs related to that, as well as giving the patient an amount that will help him live in his country until his condition becomes stabilized. Al-Saleh said, “In addition to caring for the patient financially and psychologically, a special interest is shown in the spiritual aspect, through free Umrah (minor pilgrimage) trips for cancer patients with their companions. These spiritual trips include a delegation of specialized medical and administrative teams for providing the best services to facilitate Umrah trips for these patients.
