Kuwaiti grappler Aqeel wins gold at NAGA championship

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 18, (KUNA): Kuwaiti grappler Aqeel Boskhar won a gold medal at the North America Grappling Association’s (NAGA) championship held in New Jersey, US.

In a phone conversation with KUNA, Boskhar – who competed in the purple belt category – said that he was the sole Arab grappler in the tournament gathering some 500 grapplers from all around the world.

The Kuwaiti Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner had competed in several BJJ competition around the globe, winning several medals and accolades.

Boskhar affirmed he would continue to represent Kuwait in various tournaments to improve his BJJ skills and record. BJJ is a grappling material developed from Japanese Jujitsu and Judo in Brazil as a self-defense discipline.

BJJ first found foot in Kuwait by 1999 and is practiced by men and women alike.

Boskhar expressed his happiness over the victory, revealing that he was the only Arab participant in the championship.

He said he had previously won gold medal in a competition held in Japan, four gold medals in a competition in London, a gold medal in a competition in Romania, and silver medal in an international competition held in Russia.

Meanwhile, the gymnastic competition for the 2019/2020 season will be held in Kuwait on Monday Nov 18 with the participation of 186 gymnasts.

Secretary of Kuwait Gymnastics Federation Abdullatif Murad affirmed the keenness of the federation to exert all efforts in support of this sport and ensure a successful season.

He stressed the need for cooperation of the teams and the federation, highlighting the achievements of Kuwaiti gymnasts especially in the recent competition held in Tunisia.
