Kuwaiti citizen gets 7-year jail for joining DAESH

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 29: The Court of Cassation Thursday upheld the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to seven-year imprisonment with hard labor for joining the terrorist organization DAESH in Iraq.

According to the case file, the Public Prosecution had accused the suspect of inviting people to join the terror organization which follows an extremist ideology that opposes the state, and calls for disobedience and carrying out terror attacks in foreign countries.

The suspect in that regard exposed Kuwait to the risk of cutting political ties with those countries. He was also accused of possessing a Kalashnikov gun without permit and a forged Iraqi passport under another individual’s name.

Manager acquitted: The Misdemeanor Court acquitted the manager and an employee of a travel and tourism agency forging flight tickets ascribed to an international airline company. Lawyer for the accused, Attorney Ali Al-Ali, disclosed the court doubted the entire case as there was no substantial evidence that his clients forged the tickets. He added the results of investigations carried out by detectives did not prove that his clients committed the crime.

Citizen not guilty: The Court of Appeals overturned the verdict of the First Instance Court which did not impose punishment on a citizen for possessing a firearm with 21 bullets, brain stimulants and alcohol as it decided to acquit him. Attorney Fareeh Al-Kouh, who represented the accused in court, argued that his client was arrested and searched illegally by the arresting officer. He pointed out the accused was not in any suspicious circumstance which gives police the authority to stop and search him.
