Assembly may mull de-seating convicted MPs

KUWAIT CITY, July 12: The extradition of individuals sentenced to jail for involvement in the National Assembly building storming case, including several former and current lawmakers, is expected to happen soon as the Kuwaiti government sent an official letter in this regard to the countries where the convicts are currently staying, reports Al- Qabas daily quoting a parliamentary source.

The source pointed out the Assembly will not take any action unless it officially receives the verdict from the court, affirming the verdict will not reach the Assembly before Sept 1. He said once the verdict reaches the Assembly, it will be referred to the parliamentary Legal and Legislative Affairs to prepare a report on canceling the membership of MPs Jama’an Al- Harbash and Waleed Al-Tabtabei.

The parliamentary Legislative Affairs Committee will most likely hold a meeting after the Eid Al-Adha holiday to discuss the membership of MPs Jam’an Al-Harbash and Waleed Al- Tabtabaei in view of the recent verdict issued by the Court of Cassation in relation to the Parliament building storming case, reports Al-Rai daily.

In his statement to the daily, Chairperson of the committee MP Al- Humeid Al-Subeie explained the file containing details of the ruling will not be referred to the committee any time soon, because the court need more time to prepare such file before referring it to the Parliament. He indicated that the committee also needs time to prepare the report about the verdict and its opinion on the parliamentary membership of the two MPs.

He added, “Preparing the report alone needs two weeks and then it will be referred to the Parliament for deliberation.” Al-Subeie announced that citizenship withdrawn from several individuals will be reinstated within two weeks, as the committee in charge of this file has taken a decision in this regard.

Meanwhile, addressing the issue of pharmacies which continue to operate in cooperative societies even if their permits have expired and the pharmacists working with expired licences, MP Khaled Al-Otaibi submitted a parliamentary query to Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Al-Sabeeh about the action taken in this regard.

He also submitted a query to Minister of Health Dr Bassil Al-Sabah regarding the incessant complaints of Kuwaiti pharmacists on the way the Medicine Inspection Department operates and delay in the issuance of licences. The MP asked for all relevant information so he can further look into the matter and conclude whether the issue necessitates attention of the concerned parliamentary committees or not.

In an effort to ensure the Parliament takes a stance that is appropriate with the effects of the verdict of the Court of Cassation in the case of storming of the National Assembly building, and with the intention of fixing the problem at hand, several lawmakers held a meeting at the diwaniya of MP Mohammad Al-Mutairi.

They deliberated for five hours on how to harmonize divergent viewpoints and efforts so that they can take a common stance in contacting the highest political authority for the pardon of the convicted.

They also plan to ensure the Government and majority of the lawmakers will not vote to declare seats of MPs Jama’an Al-Harbash and Waleed Al-Tabtabaei. The lawmakers in attendance contacted ten other colleagues who supported conclusions of the meeting, although they were not present at the meeting or had signed the communiqué.
