KUWAIT CITY, Jan 13, (KUNA): Minister of Public Works Ali Al-Omair on Wednesday vowed to punish those responsible for defective roads namely recurring accidents caused by flying pebbles. Minister Al-Omair, also Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, during a parliamentary session responding to queries by an MP, affirmed that his ministry is following up with concern on recurrence of such accidents, emphasizing that any civil servant or official who has not done his job properly in this respect will be punished.

The minister said his predecessors had referred the issue of such recurring accidents, flying pebbles on the streets, to the Public Prosecution. He explained that the former ministers had reported about contractors and companies that had failed to abide by standing standards for asphalting the roads. This question is currently under examination by the prosecution, he said, affirming that not a shred of information would be concealed in this respect. All required documents are in possession of the ministry, which is also under examination of the National Assembly, the minister said, expressing readiness to take part in sessions of the relevant parliamentary committees for cooperation on such issues.

Municipal Council Chairman Mehalhel Al-Khalid said the decision to put Kuwaiti islands under the protected natural areas is aimed at regulating entry into the islands and developing facilities to better serve the visitors, reports Al-Rai daily.

Speaking to reporters, Al-Khalid explained the council has no problem with the process of development, indicating the focus now is on the islands in the southern part of the country as they are strategically located and they are more important for the tourism sector than those in the northern part due to the presence of landmarks and coral reefs. He confirmed the development plan for Boubyan Island will be implemented upon completion of the Mubarak Port project. In another development, Al-Qabas daily has reported that the Cleaning Department at the Kuwait Municipality branch in Mubarak Al-Kabeer recently conducted a clean-up drive in Abu Fatira, including the removal of fallen trees and cleaning of some yards. The daily added the campaign will continue in other areas to maintain cleanliness and beauty of the area.

Moreover, the daily quoted sources as saying that Director General of the Municipality Eng Ahmad Al-Manfouhi has forwarded a letter to the heads of the concerned sectors in the governorates on the demolition of unlicensed cabins in cafés. Sources explained this is in line with the recommendation of the Municipality Council in its recently-concluded meeting, during which an agreement was reached on the need to remove encroachments on State properties. Sources said the sectors have been instructed to present a report one month after conducting this campaign. Also, Al-Kuwaitiyah daily has reported that Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Al-Subaih issued a decision on the dissolution of the Board of Directors of Yarmouk Cooperative Society. Consequently, the minister appointed Abdullah Shabib Al- Marji as interim director for one year.
