Kuwait men win Independence Cup

KUWAIT CITY, March 13: The British Academy of Sport (BAS) organized the largest ever International Sports Tournament between the various Embassies in Kuwait over a two-day event with ladies on Friday and men on Saturday. BAS and the Serbian Embassy were joint patrons for the 2nd International Women’s Tournament, “Olympia Cup”, with 7 teams representing Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, Philippines, Romania, Tunisia and USA.

From the opening game a high level of skill and expertise was in evidence as the ladies fought very competitively to get through to the final. Host nation Kuwait joined newcomers Philippines and after 3 nail biting sets it was the Philippines who held the Olympia Cup 2017 aloft much to the delight of their colourful and jubilant supporters. BAS Founder, Madame Vera Al Mutawa MBE, HE The Serbian Ambassador to Kuwait Vladimir Kohut, Ms Balsam Al Alyoub and The Director of British Academy of Sport Lucian Anisia presented the awards on the stage and the Olympia Cup to the winners.

On Saturday, the second day of the Tournament, BAS and the Romanian Embassy were the patrons for the 4th International Men’s Tournament, “Independence Cup”, with 12 countries including Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Kirghizstan, Palestine, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia and Zimbabwe opening the event with a highly colourful parade which included national dress, mascots, flags and enthusiastic supporters. It was an amazing day with very strong teams and great matches. The semifinals were played between newcomers India and Kirghizstan and Kuwait against Iran. After winning 4 very challenging matches it was the host nation Kuwait who won the Independence Cup 2017. The tournament was attended by many of the Ambassadors of the participating countries and also a huge number of community supporters of the various countries were proudly wearing their patriotism for everyone to see and enjoy. HE the Romanian Ambassador, Daniel Tanase, and special guest Sultan Abdulmajeed, a well known player from Kuwait Volleyball’s National Team, presented the trophy and the medals to the winners, runners up and the participating teams.

In April BAS students will travel to Ireland for a Sports and Culture trip and in May the annual Gala Awards Evening will be held.
