KUWAIT CITY, Oct 21, (Agencies): Just three months after a years-long competitive sports ban was lifted, Kuwait is proud to be hosting the 25th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships, hoping it will raise its profile in the regional and global sports arenas.

The continental event was launched at a ceremony on Sunday, for the first time in the Gulf country, under the auspices of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah.

Kuwait Bowling Federation chief Sheikh Talal Mohammad Al-Sabah, who also presides over Asia’s governing body, said the tournament has received the backing of the Kuwaiti leadership, who aims to reclaim Kuwait’s pioneering role across numerous spectrums – sports included.

Public Sports Authority Director-General Humoud Flaiteh revealed that Kuwait plans to host more global sports events in the near future.

Bowlers from 27 nations, including Australia, Malaysia, Macau, Thailand and Singapore, are taking part.

The opening ceremony of the 25th Asian Bowling Championship held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel was spectacular with varied amazing shows.

Meanwhile, the winners of the individual competition for women will be honored at Kuwait Bowling Center located in Salmiya on Tuesday at 4:10 pm.

The activities will begin at 7:30 am starting with lubricating the lanes, followed by the training activities. The competitions will start in the afternoon.

Serious competition is expected among South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Japan. South Korea is expected to defend their place at the top of the leaderboard where they remained throughout the last three editions of the championship.

The individual competition for women will be followed by the honoring of the winners with medals, then lubricating the lanes after which the individual competition for men will begin.

For the first time, the championship will witness the first participation of Kuwaiti women – Altaf Karam, Hessa Al-Jareed, Fatima Al-Jareed, Sawsan Al-Oun, Sumaiya Al-Abdullah and Zubaida Al-Essa. This is the first participation of Kuwait’s national women bowling team in an international competition.
