KU wins CFA Institute Research Challenge – Winning team to represent Kuwait at EMEA regional

KUWAIT CITY, March 8: Kuwait University became the 2015-16 CFA Institute Research Challenge winner in the Kuwait, beating other universities in a close competition hosted by CFA Society Kuwait, the local society of CFA Institute. Each competing team analysed the financial performance of Mezzan Holding to produce a comprehensive equity research report which was then judged by CFA representatives based on accuracy, insight and thorough analysis.

The winning team will represent Kuwait at the EMEA regional competition final in Chicago, Illinois, USA the week of April 11, 2016 where it will compete against other teams from around the world. The successful team will then go on to compete in the Global Final taking place in the same location. The competition featured four teams from four different universities including: Australian College of Kuwait, American University of Kuwait, American University of the Middle East, and Kuwait University. The teams produced an equity research report that was graded by industry experts, and then presented their findings on Mezzan Holding to a panel of judges who then conducted a Q&A session.

Commenting on this year’s research challenge, Robin Bhattacharya, CFA, Education Committee Chair of CFA Society Kuwait and Host of the challenge, commented: “As Kuwait’s financial market continues to grow, greater levels of transparency, technical competence and integrity are becoming increasingly important. The annual CFA research challenge is a very positive platform to showcase the financial talent available within Kuwait and also encourage young graduates to consider the CFA program as the qualification of choice. In addition, we would like to express our gratitude to the judges, the industry mentors and coordinators for their time and effort in making the 2015-2016 CFA Institute Research Challenge in Kuwait a success.”

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an educational competition for university students, offers participants the opportunity to assume the role of investment research analysts and subsequently develop and present an equity research report, which was based this year on Mezzan Holding. Student teams compete on a global basis with peers from top business schools.

Each team was closely mentored by an investment expert during the research process. After drafting the report and receiving feedback from the designated mentor, each team made a presentation which was given to a panel of experts from top financial institutions. The panel of judges included the following industry professionals: Abdulaziz Al Loughani, Vice-Chairman of Kuwait National Fund for SMEs Development, Mr. Faisal Hasan, CFA, Chief Business Development Officer at KAMCO, Dr. Mohammad Alomar, Head of Research Division at GIC, and Mr. Rani Selwanes, Executive Director — Investment Banking at NBK Capital.
