Panel discusses co-op in field of education

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 11: Assistant Foreign Minister for European Affairs Walid Al-Khubaizi said the Joint Steering Committee held its 15th session at the level of committees in Kuwait on Thursday to discuss issues and agreements to be signed next Sunday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports Annahar daily.

Al-Khubaizi revealed in a special statement to the daily that by virtue of the close relationship with the United Kingdom, the two sides are keen on holding these meetings to establish work between the two friendly countries in several fields. He said the issue of UK’s exit from the European Union was not raised during the meetings of the Steering Committee as the discussions focused on the framework of cooperation between the two countries.

He added the committee discussed the level of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of education, higher education, scientific research, liberal security, military, commerce, civil aviation through airport security, justice and all other aspects. He explained the signing of cooperation agreements between the two countries was among the items in the agenda.

He revealed that for the first time, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) will sign a cooperation agreement with its British counterpart for the development of poor and developing countries. He clarified this is due to the experience and good reputation of KFAED in other countries and its successful experiences in this field.

He referred to the visit of British Minister of State for Middle East Affairs Andrew Morrison to Kuwait to attend the signing of agreements and memoranda of understanding between the two countries next Sunday. He pointed out this is the first time for Morrison to lead the delegation in the meetings of the Joint Steering Committee in Kuwait, indicating the latter headed the delegation in the last 14th session in London last summer.

It is worth mentioning that the 14th Steering Committee meeting was held in London in June last year where three agreements were signed – first was between the National Guard and the British Ministry of Defense related to training, second was between the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the British Council related to scientific and technological research, and third was between the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters with the British Council to take advantage of British expertise in the knowledge of industrial economy. On the Kuwaiti side, the committee is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah, while the British side was chaired by Andrew Morrison, Minister of State for East and North Africa Affairs. The committee consists of a large number of representatives of government agencies in both countries. It holds biannual meetings interspersed with review of projects and achievements made in the course of relations between the two countries.
