Jail, fine overturned, man acquitted in ‘drugs case’

KUWAIT CITY, March 4: The Court of Cassation presided over by the Judge Najib Al-Mulla overturned the verdict issued by a lower court which sentenced a Kuwaiti woman to 18-month imprisonment. The court instead acquitted her of charges of breach of trust. The defense counsel Lawyer Jarrah Al-Shuraika explained that the relation between the plaintiff, who is the owner of the company, and his client was of the commercial kind. A contract was signed by the two parties for payment of the price of rebar worth KD 35 in installments. He stressed that there were no criminal intent involved and his client received the rebar as per the contract.

Jail, fine overturned: The Court of Appeals overturned the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced a Bedoun man to jail term of three years and four months with hard labor followed by deportation, and imposed a fine of KD 2,000. The court instead acquitted him. According to the case files, the Bedoun man was accused of consuming drugs and illegal brain stimulants after he was arrested by police officers in Jahra Stables area. According to the arresting officer’s testimony, he was following up a robbery report received by the Operations Room of Ministry of Interior when he came across the suspect, who along with some individuals, starting running away as soon as they saw the police. During the police chase, the officer cornered the suspect inside a horse stable and arrested him. Sensing his disoriented state, the officer checked him to find drugs and drug paraphernalia. However, the defense counsel Lawyer Esmat Al-Kharboutli insisted that the police arrested her client illegally because he had no legal grounds to stop him or search him, adding that he did everything without receiving permission from the Public Prosecution.

Woman commits suicide: A 1979- born Indian woman who was suffering from a mental illness, committed suicide in the Psychiatric Medicine Hospital by hanging herself. According to sources, she was taken to the hospital by some officers and she was admitted in the hospital. However, nurses later found her hanging from the ceiling. The doctor rushed to the ward and examined her to discover she was dead. Necessary action was taken. Investigations revealed that she was suffering from a mental illness. Meanwhile, an Asian woman tried to commit suicide by consuming large quantity of pills inside her sponsor’s house in Firdous area. She was referred to the nearest hospital where she has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition. Preliminary investigations revealed that she took such a step after she received a call from her country.

Dead man in sea: The corpse of an unidentified Asian that was washed ashore by the waves on a beach off the Arabian Gulf Street, has been referred to forensics to identify the cause of death, reports Al-Anba daily. The victim is believed to be in his 40s. It is reported the death occurred about 24 hours ago and part of his body was eaten by fish.
