KUWAIT CITY, Sept 22: The file of special transactions for board members of Al-Durra Domestic Recruitment Company has become akin to governmental transactions that are passed under the table or the government’s contracts with foreign countries that are conducted indirectly without a public announcement benefiting citizens who have applications that require intervention by the concerned authorities, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Authorities such as Kuwait Anti- Corruption Authority are required to step in to find out whether or not there is abuse of authority, because some who are waiting to have their applications responded to are getting what they want with wasta and connections.

Informed sources explained that the lack of supervision of the company by governmental agencies has contributed to increase in the number of special transactions for the recruitment of domestic workers from India and the Philippines without going through proper channels and the policy prescribed within the company.

This means some of the recruited domestic workers reach their new sponsors without the knowledge of the company’s management. They revealed that a member of the Board of Directors has passed unofficial transactions of his relatives who are not on the waiting list, adding that this matter now requires a formal investigation by regulators or a referral to the Kuwait Anti-Corruption Authority.

A document, a copy of which the daily has obtained, revealed that one of the current members of the board of directors issued an entry visa for a domestic worker from the Philippines under the name of Al-Durra Company on August 16 to his sister.

The document confirmed what the daily had previously said about the board members of the company passing transactions for their relatives “under the table”, while more than 1,800 transactions await the declared applications for recruitment of domestic workers from Sri Lanka under the promise of opening the door of recruitment of domestic workers from the Philippines and India.
