India imposes curfew as coronavirus cases jump to 324

NEW DELHI, March 22: Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Sunday that five people died from coronavirus, while the number of infected people climbed to 324, including 41 foreign nationals as the central government imposed a nation-wide 14-hour people’s curfew.
A statement by ministry of health, noted that coronavirus infected cases in the worst affected Maharashtra state rose to 63, including three foreigners while the southern Indian state of Kerala recorded the second largest number of coronavirus infections with 52 confirmed cases including seven foreign nationals.

Maharashtra recorded two deaths due to the coronavirus infection while Delhi, Karnataka and Punjab recorded one death each.
Other states that registered infections are Delhi (27) including one foreigner, Uttar Pradesh (25) including one foreigner, Rajasthan (24) including two foreigners, Telangana (21) including 11 foreigners, Karnataka (20), Haryana (17) including 14 foreigners, Gujarat (14), Ladakh (13), Punjab (13), Tamil Nadu (6) including two foreigners, Chandigarh (5), Madhya Pradesh (4), Jammu and Kashmir (4), Andhra Pradesh (3) , Uttarakhand (3), West Bengal (2), Odisha (2), Himachal Pradesh (2), Puducherry (1) and Chhattisgarh (1).


Meanwhile, people across India are observing a 14-hour people’s curfew today, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed as part of a massive awareness campaign and a tribute to the health workers.
Shops, government and non-government institutions, road, rail and air services are suspended today as all the people across the country are advised to stay home.


Authorities have already taken massive preventive measures including closing down schools, educational institutions and universities, and suspension of flight services to and from the affected countries in addition to restricting public gatherings and religious festivals (KUNA)
