Hundreds of ‘expat’ teachers face sack – ‘Syrians not in list’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 28: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has started taking procedures to terminate the services of hundreds of expatriate teachers. According to sources close to the ministry, the Human Resources Department was instructed to notify expatriate teachers in some educational districts about their termination before the national holidays while other notifications will be issued in March.

Those covered by the decision include supervisors who have served for more than 30 years, but teachers from Syria will be excluded due to the unstable political condition in their country. Sources added the subjects affected include Islamic Studies, Computer Studies, Science, Humanities, Mathematics, Arabic and English in primary and secondary schools.

Another source disclosed the Civil Service Commission (CSC) has asked Assistant Undersecretary for Public Education Affairs Fatma Al-Kandari to determine the current number of electrical subject teachers in primary level in order to reduce them. The source also hinted on the possibility of transferring these teachers to the Traffic Awareness Sector as a preliminary step towards ‘Kuwaitization’ of such subjects especially in the primary level.
