His Highness Amir’s football tourney kicks off

KUWAIT CITY, Sept. 9: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah’s 59th soccer tournament (2020-2021) will kick-start on Friday, with 15 sporting clubs contesting. According to the draw held in December 2020, the participating teams were divided into two groups; Group A and Group B. Group A encompasses Al-Arabi, Al-Jahraa, Al-Shabab, Al-Sulaibikhat, Burgan, Al-Qadsiya and Al-Tadamon. Group B embraces Kuwait Club, Al-Sahel, Khaitan, Al-Fahaheel, Al-Yarmouk, Al-Nasr, Al-Salmiya and Kazma.

The team which loses will have no second chance. Tomorrow’s matches will put Al-Sulaibikhat against Burgan and Al-Jahraa against Al-Shabab. Title-holder Al-Arabi will directly advance to the second round of the soccer tournament. His Highness the Amir Cup was first launched during the 1961- 1962 sports season. Al-Qadsiya and Al-Arabi have won it 16 times, while Kuwait Club has snatched the title 14 rounds (KUNA)
