Al-Ghanim stressed importance of co-op in bid to ‘fight coronavirus’

KUWAIT CITY, March 11: MP Osama Al-Shaheen prepared a statement on the National Assembly Office meeting held Tuesday to discuss the procedures taken by the government to deal with coronavirus, as per the directive of Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim.

In the statement, Al-Ghanim stressed the importance of cooperation among authorities, civil society organizations and individuals in confronting the virus.

On the other hand, HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah affirmed that HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is closely following up developments regarding covonavirus. He said HH the Amir is keen on ensuring the safety of citizens and expatriates. He added the Amir has instructed the government to intensify efforts in guaranteeing public safety and health.

During the meeting, Health Minister Dr Bassel Al-Sabah delivered a detailed presentation on the measures taken by the government in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Arab Ministers of Health.

Refuted
He refuted the alleged concealment of the actual number of individuals infected with coronavirus, confirming the Ministry of Health (MoH) remains committed to the principle of transparency in this regard.

In addition, the ministers of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Information, Education, Higher Education, Commerce and Industry also delivered presentations on the steps taken by their respective ministries.

They stressed that all the decisions and regulations they are implementing are in accordance with the opinions of technical and medical experts.

On the other hand, the MPs emphasized the importance of transparency under such circumstances. They also demanded for closure of the academic year in order to guarantee the safety of students, considering the difficulty in supplying all schools with the necessary medical equipment.

They urged the government to suspend flights to and from countries with coronavirus cases. The government promised to consider the comments and recommendations of the MPs. In a related development, MP Hamdan Al-Azmi issued a press statement in which he praised the decision to close wedding halls and ban public activities.

Suspension
He called for ending the academic year, closure of Kuwait International Airport except for commercial flights, and partial suspension of work in public institutions for two weeks except those with very vital functions such as those involved in addressing the coronavirus crisis.

He suggested that before the two week period ends, the situation must be assessed and then a suitable decision should be taken — either to continue the suspension of work or to resume work.

He pointed out most ministries and public institutions have had no visitors since the outbreak as people are afraid of crowded areas, so they decided to postpone the completion of their transactions until the end of the crisis.

He added it has been observed that all public institutions are committed to the decision of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to exempt employees from the fingerprint attendance system, except the Kuwait Ports Authority whose director insists that employees must use the fingerprint machines to register their attendance.
