KUWAIT CITY, Oct 5, (AP): A Kuwaiti driver who apparently thought having license plates from another Gulf country would help avoid more than 1,600 traffic citations has been hit with a huge fine. The state-run Kuwait News Agency says the driver racked up 1,645 different driving violations while traveling under the unnamed Gulf country’s plates.

KUNA quoted a statement from an Interior Ministry official, Maj Gen Abdullah Al-Mehanna, as saying that the driver faced over $190,000 in fines after being caught.

The statement on Saturday did not identify the driver, but reminded drivers they have a month’s grace period to change their license plates to Kuwaiti ones for foreign-bought cars. Countries throughout the Gulf use traffic cameras to enforce speed limits and traffic laws.
