Agency to be set up to manage crises

KUWAIT CITY, July 13: The government is in the process of setting up a crises and disasters management agency that may occur in the country, reports Annahar daily quoting knowledgeable sources.

The agency will be directly subordinated to the Council of Ministers, and its task will be to prepare studies and researches on everything that pose a threat to the state from the expected crises and disasters and will have the right to seek help from all state organs to achieve its objectives. The agency will demand services from ministries such as Public Works, Health, Petroleum, Electricity and Water.

The Ministry of Commerce and all service providers in the state will have to submit periodic reports at least 3 times a year and establish national factories capable of meeting the country’s security and safety requirements, the sources added.

The sources pointed out, the new body will be assigned to determine the ability of the strategic stock of goods, medicines and energy and address any developments in the status quo.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry had earlier confirmed that the country’s strategic food stocks can suffice for about 9 months, while the Ministry of Health said the stockpile of medicines and medical supplies was good enough for 6 months.

In a related context, the sources confirmed that work is under way in full swing to provide additional quantities of fuel products by the introduction of new service tanks, noting that the fuel reserve is currently sufficient for more than 30 days, while the concerned authorities are working to double those reserves.

The source also mentioned that there are talks on increasing the strategic stock of water through the establishment of mechanisms to support water desalination through the import of additional quantities via specialized companies.
