First ‘Female media Sports Forum’ tackles media women challenges – Leading sports media personalities hold panel discussion

SHARJAH, Feb 5: The Women Arab Sports Tournament (AWST) hosted by Sharjah from Feb 2-12 saw more victory for the UAE in volleyball on its third day with Al Wasl wining against Lebanon’s Al Qalmoun 3-0, while Jordan’s Olympic won against Palestine’s Ebdaa 3-0.

In basketball, Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) beat Baniyas in a two-UAE-team match 104-49, while Algeria’s Olympic won against Bahrain’s Al-Najma 64-59, and Egypt’s Sporting won against Qatar’s Qatar Ladies Club 51-37.

Athletics competition results saw Bahrain ranked first, winning 10 medals, 7 gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Algeria ranked second winning 9 medals, 4 gold, 3 silver and two bronze medals. Yemen ranked third, winning 5 medals; 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. UAE ranked fourth with two silver medals.  Egypt ranked fifth winning four medals; one silver and three bronze medals,  Oman ranked sixth winning three medals; one silver and 2 bronze medals and Libya ranked seventh winning one bronze medal.

The UAE won silver in the 10-meter shooting competition, Bahrain won gold and Kuwait won the bronze medal. Individual results of the same competition were; Bahraini Moza Ali ranked first, followed by her countryman Aisha Buraiki who ranked second place and the Emirati Wafa Al Ali ranked third.

In table tennis competition, the Lebanses Al Nadwa Alkamateyah won against Yemen’s Al Fata team, Qatar Ladies Club and Morocco’s Znanah Shallalat Al Muhammadiyah team. Jordan’s Orthodox team won against Yemen’s Al Fata team, Algeria’s Sport Women team and Qatar Ladies Club. Algeria’s Sport Women team won against Saudi’s Green Jeddah team and Sharjah Ladies Club. Yemen’s Al Fata team won against Morocco’s Znanah Shallalat Al Muhammadiyah team. Bahrain’s team won against Saudi’s Green Jeddah team and the Sharjah Ladies Club team, while Qatar Ladies Club won against Morocco’s Znanah Shallalat Al Muhammadiyah team.

On the third day of AWST a forum for female sports media persons was held, under the slogan “It’s your turn”. The forum came up with five recommendations for helping more women in to sports media which includes finding solutions for support and more sponsors.

Secondly there is a need to work on increasing the role of women in sports journalism and have more workshops that relate to sports journalism. Cooperation between media organisations needs to increase to enable women’s sports more broadcasting time. Another recommendation is to prepare and plan a strategy to develop the skills of players and administrators in the various sports federations. The final recommendation is to give more attention to award-winners promoting them as models for next generations.

The third Arab Women Sports Tournament 2016 is being held under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
