KUWAIT CITY, Oct 15, (Agencies): Teams from seven fire departments were able to bring a fire under control that engulfed three warehouses in Shuwaikh industrial zone, Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) announced on Saturday. KFSD Director Maj Gen Khaled Al- Mekrad told KUNA that the fire only caused material damage; firefighters were able to isolate the fire from spreading to nearby warehouses. Investigation has been opened to know the reasons behind the fire.

Earlier, firemen are currently battled fires raging at three warehouses including electrical, electronic appliances and weddings’ accessories in Al-Shuwaikh district, the fire department said on Saturday. The firemen acted rapidly as they try to isolate the blaze, said Al-Mekrad in a statement to KUNA, indicating that they prevented the fire from spreading to nearby stores. The blazes are raging within a 4,000- sq-m location, he said.

There have been no reports about injuries. In other news, in less than 48 hours after a fire broke out in a food warehouse in Al-Rai area and Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD), after extinguishing the fire, discovered several serious violations, the Prevention Sector of KFSD launched an extensive inspection campaign on the stores and warehouses in Al-Rai area during which the team issued 13 citations on stores and buildings that violated fire prevention regulations and gave warnings to four other buildings.

According to a press statement issued by Ministry of Interior, the campaign was launched based on instructions of the Director General of KFSD Lieutenant General Khalid Al-Mekrad and in the presence of Acting Deputy Director General for Fire Prevention Affairs Brigadier Khalid Al-Fahad and other high-ranking fire officials.

Brigadier Al-Fahad stressed the efforts exerted by KFSD to ensure fire safety measures are implemented in buildings and establishments and to warn those that do not comply with fire safety conditions. He said KFSD has been studying the possibility of increasing the fines of firerelated violations by twofold.
