KUWAIT CITY, Sept 12: Parents have been enduring psychologically and financially amid the implementation of Ministry of Education’s “Distance Learning” project as they cannot find time to help their children in the elementary stage to follow lessons online due to their working hours, in addition to the increase in prices of laptops, which reaches KD400 per device, wondering the cost parents of five or six children would bear in this regard.

Educational observers said Ministry of Education has put parents in a difficult situation on their commitment to distance learning, in terms of time and funds, especially if the situation continues without solution as the Ministry of Education did not resort to alternatives or realistic solutions and only force the schools and institutes to implement e-learning. Observers stressed that Ministry of Education’s failure to e-learning is not momentary, as it has previous experiences that cost the state budget millions without any benefit, most notably the flash memory and tablet project, reports Al-Shahid daily. These electronic projects quickly collapse without any achievement or goals.

The only goal these projects achieved was to pump money into the supplier (companies) amounting to more than KD10 million that went with the wind. Then comes the distance learning project, which has not achieved any benefit so far, but the only benefit it achieved is an insane increase in the prices of laptops and iPads.

A number of parents confirmed that Ministry of Education’s decision to apply distance learning has led to an unprecedented increase in the prices of laptops and computers, and negatively affecting the financial income of the family- especially as every parent has at least two students in school stages. It is unreasonable to buy electronic devices at such exorbitant prices, which will be used for a short period until learning returns to its normal state.

They noted the prices of electronic devices jumped from KD 100 to 400 or more due to the increase in demand for them in stores, pointing out that not all parents can afford, hence, it is more appropriate that the ministry finds a quick solution to the dilemma, which is similar to that of other countries where schools have resumed and strictly adhering to the health requirements.
