‘Drug addiction on rise in both genders’ – Govt response inadequate: expert

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 3: Maitham Al- Ustaz, specialist who is known for treating drug addicts has warned of the menace of drug addiction in Kuwait among people of both sexes which is rising at an alarming rate, reports Al-Qabas daily. He told the daily, the rate of drug addiction in Kuwait has reached seven percent which by far exceeds the internationally recognized rate of 2.5 percent.

Al-Ustaz said that the most dangerous types of drugs consumed here are known as ‘chemical’, and ‘shabu’ which cause damage to the brain cells and lead to madness. He warned these types of drugs are used by addicts in an abnormal manner and said the state has not acted at the required level.

He noted 80 percent of the drug dealers are inmates from the Central Prison and they sell their ‘merchandise’ through the use of cell phones In an unrelated development, Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) has got the required authorization from the concerned parties for the establishment of joint stock company to recruit domestic workers, reports Al-Anba daily. The daily added, the formation of the company is expected to be announced soon.

MP Kamel Al-Awadi said the company is expected to be established within one month after the KIA gets the nod from the Public Institute for Social Security (PISS), the Public Authority for Minors Affairs, the Kuwait Airways Corporation and its subsidiaries and the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies.
