Dozens of debtors released to prevent spread of coronavirus

‘Agreement reached with MoH to test about 4,500 prisoners’

KUWAIT CITY, March 18: The General Administration of Correctional Institutions has released dozens of debtors from the Civil Execution Department as part of the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus among inmates upon instructions issued to the prison administration by the judiciary (sentences enforcement judges), reports Al-Anba daily.

A reliable source told the daily this is done within the framework of the commitment of the Ministry of Interior to prevent gatherings. The securitymen have also standing instructions not to stalk people wanted by law in money matters until further notice.

On the other hand, a delegation from the Ministry of Health visited the Central Prison to get first hand information on measures taken by the prison authorities to prevent the spread of the virus among inmates.

According to security sources, the delegation was informed that inmates are not allowed to physically communicate with each other for 14 days mandatory self ‘quarantine’ to ensure none of the new inmates were infected with this virus.

In the meantime, the Al- Qabas daily said, Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Correctional Institutions Affairs and the Implementation of Sentences, Major General Farraj Alzubi, said an agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Health to test about 4,500 prisoners to ensure they are free from the coronavirus. Alzubi told the daily once the modern rapid detection kits arrive from abroad, all prisoners will be tested.

However, he indicated the prison sector has taken a series of precautionary and preventive measures to prevent the virus spreading behind bars, including isolation of new inmates who arrived at the prison after Feb 27. They have been housed in a separate building. Alzubi confirmed the new prisoners are examined before they enter the facility. The official also said since Feb 25, all visits to the prison facility have been put on hold to protect the inmates
