Double trap champion Al-Mutairi wins gold medal in final day
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 12: Kuwaiti double trap champion Saad Al-Mutairi guaranteed his country a gold medal in the final day of the 8th Asian Shotgun and 11th Asian Airgun Championships that concluded Monday at Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Olympic Shooting Complex.
China won this year’s title aptly, and Kuwait came fourth in medals after winning three new silver medals in the final day of the championship.
Al-Mutairi won gold medal in the double trap contest while the silver went to his compatriot Ahmad Al-Afasi after the deciding round with Oman’s Ahmad Al-Hatimi who settled for bronze, whereas another Kuwaiti Jarrah Al-Shuweir exited at the qualification stages in tenth place.
Kuwaiti trio of Al-Mutairi, Al-Afasi and Al-Shuweir bagged silver medal in the team’s double trap whereas Kuwaiti duo of Abdul-Rahman Al-Faihan and Sarah Al-Hawwal won silver in the mixed duo trap event, which was claimed by Taiwanese duo of Jong Hyung Sik and Wang Yo Liu, and bronze went to the Chinese duo. Another Kuwaiti duo of Talal Al-Rashidi and Shahad Al-Hawwal came seventh in the same category.
In the same category for juniors, a Chinese duo won gold, followed in the second place by a Kazakhstan duo, and third place was taken by the Chinese.
China finished the championships on the top in medals table with 23 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze, followed by India (5 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze), and Kazakhstan taking the third place with 4 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze, while Kuwait came fourth with 3 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze.
The fifth position was taken by Thailand with two gold medals and Taiwan in the sixth place with gold, silver and 6 bronze medals. At the seventh was Oman with gold and bronze medals, followed by Singapore in eighth position with 4 silver and 3 bronze medals, while the UAE claimed the ninth place with a silver and a bronze, and Japan, Bahrain and Qatar won a bronze medal each.
Meanwhile, secretary of the Kuwaiti Shooting Club and head of the championship Obeidi Al-Oseimi expressed satisfaction with the Kuwaiti national team’s performance amid strong competition witnessed with the continental champions who are considered among best in the world. Also, he commended tireless efforts the team exerted throughout the tournament.
Al-Oseimi stressed the Kuwaiti Shooting Club is planning to hold another major competition in February next year, which is the HH the Amir International Shooting Grand Prix expected to see the participation of international shooters.
He extended deep appreciation and gratitude to all who participated in the championship committees for their diligence that contributed to successes of this continental championship.
