A group of 13 Kuwaiti students with disabilities have successfully completed a month-long Internship Programme in retail stores as part of an ongoing collaboration between retail franchise operator M.H. Al- Shaya Co and Kuwait’s Society for the Guardians of the Disabled (KSGD). The students worked part-time and received supervised training in retail sales across several branches of Starbucks, Debenhams and Mothercare.

The program, now in its sixth year, is designed to teach vocational and life skills to disabled students who have no previous job experience. The programme concluded with an award ceremony at the IHOP restaurant at The Mall, The Avenues, to celebrate the interns’ accomplishments during their work experience.

The ceremony was attended by families of the participants and certificates were presented to them by His Excellency the Governor of Farwaniya, Sheikh Faisal Homoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah; President of KSGD, Rahab Bouresli; The Honorary President of Kuwait Disabled Club, Sheikha Sheikha Al- Abdullah Al-Sabah; The General Manager of the Public Authority of Disabled, Dr Tareq Al-Shatti; and Al- Shaya’s HR Nationalisation Officer, Mubarak Al-Musallam.

Al-Shaya’s partnership with the KSGD internship programme began in 2010, initially offering candidates parttime work experience in Starbucks branches across the country. Al- Shaya’s partnership with KSGD is part of its wider commitment to developing the skills and talents of young Kuwaitis, providing them with an equal chance to learn and develop.
