KUWAIT CITY, April 13: The Misdemeanor Court chaired by Judge Mohammad Al-Duaij has set May 16 for hearing in the lawsuit filed by Ministry of Information against ex-MP Musallam Al- Barrak over alleged malicious statement the defendant made against the judiciary on Al-Yawm TV Channel concerning the Constitutional Court verdict over the onevote system. Representing the defendant, Attorney Thamer Al-Jad’a argued that the Ministry of Information had no right to criticize the judiciary, indicating the act was outside its prerogative. He urged the court to dismiss the case, as stipulated by law, based on lack of an official complainant. He affirmed that the statement made by his client was a mere uttering of the obvious rather than attacking individuals or the judicial authority. He criticized the Public Prosecution for mixing up the statement with the intention of government to falsely link it to the judiciary. He reiterated that his client only meant that the Constitutional Court was being political, and it’s possible to criticize verdicts without necessarily attacking the judiciary.

Detention ordered: The Public Prosecution has ordered the detention of a Saudi citizen, identified as M. H. M, in the Central Prison for ten days for investigations over the allegation of fraudulent act relating to issuance of several dud cheques to defraud some people. The suspect was caught by Egyptian detectives and detained in Egypt until he was handed over to the Kuwaiti authority. It is noteworthy that about 23 people were victims of the scam and the swindled amount exceeds KD2.5 million.

Verdict upheld: The Misdemeanor Court of Appeals upheld the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which sentenced a former inspector to three-month imprisonment for posting offensive remarks against the Director of Criminal Investigations Department Major General Mahmoud Al-Tabakh on his Twitter account. The court instead suspended the sentence for three years and ordered him to pay KD 3,000. Besides insulting Major General Al- Tabakh, the defendant was also accused of misusing his mobile phone.
