KUWAIT CITY, Oct 14, (KUNA): Public Authority for Youth and Sports (PAYS) Board Chairman and Director-General Sheikh Ahmad Mansour Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said on Wednesday the delegation in Lausanne had only agreed to setting up a team for discussing recent legal amendments.

He added that the information posted on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the recent meeting between the Kuwaiti delegation and IOC officials was not accurate, according to a statement by the PAYS.

He wrote to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Delegate Member for Autonomy Patrick Hickey saying “we have noticed that the IOC’s website has published a report that does not reflect the accurate position of our delegation during the meeting.” Sheikh Ahmad reiterated the delegation’s rejection to amendments to Law 117/2014 and 25/2015.

“The delegation did not accept any timeframe for changing Kuwaiti laws for the reasons which we explained during the meeting. But, we only agreed to setting up a team with a view to discussing your viewpoint for recent legal amendments,” he said in his letter to Hickey.

He called on the IOC to address the misinterpretation of the Kuwaiti position through the clarification of this matter on its website.

“Regrettably, we have not received the points which you promised to send last night regarding claims that the revised law runs counter with the Olympic Charter,” he regretted.

He urged the IOC official to send a letter containing the controversial points, together with a copy of the minute of the meeting as previously agreed.

The PAYA chief concluded by hoping that Kuwait’s joint teams could clarify the Kuwaiti lawmakers’ intention in a way that could avert additional complications.

Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah had led a governmental delegation and had talks with IOC members over the Kuwaiti sports situation.

The minister had said following the meeting that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) received inaccurate information on the Kuwaiti sports situation, but “we have rectified the image.” He added that he had clarified to the IOC in full transparency that Kuwaiti sports laws are compatible with the Olympic Charter and relevant international regulations.

He had also stressed sovereignty and full respect by the State of Kuwait for local sports laws, and international regulations and criteria.

Meanwhile, Kuwait is keen on taking part enthusiastically in GCC sports events, said Deputy Director for Sports Affairs at the Public Authority for Youth and Sports Humoud Flaiteh in a press statement on Wednesday.

He made that statement prior to leaving today, along with a Kuwaiti delegation, to participate in the opening ceremony of the 2nd GCC Sport Tournament tomorrow. The tournament is set to go on until Oct 27, he said.

The tournament will see competition among GCC athletes in 15 sports including track and field, soccer, basketball, handball, swimming, weight lifting, judo, karate, table tennis, and bowling. In addition to that there will be an equestrian competition, camel racing, and a sport event exclusively for the sight-challenged.
