KUWAIT CITY, Aug 12: Ministerial sources allayed fears of several members of the National Assembly saying the decision to increase fuel price will not affect the livelihood of citizens.

They stressed the concerned government agency will monitor the market for unjustified price increase and take necessary action against violators, reports Al-Anba daily. Meanwhile, parliamentary sources noted the decision to increase fuel prices will pass through probation period of three months, after which government will study its returns on the budget and possible effects on citizens before conducting a general review in that concern.

For his part, MP Kamel Al-Awadhi stated the decision to increase fuel prices without providing financial support will negatively affect citizens, and that parliament will not accept it.

Also, MP Dr Abdulrahman Al-Jeran explained that government had promised to study the issue and shown complete flexibility and comprehensive understanding of all its odds. In a related incident, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation has requested fuel companies to present measures adopted on the implementation of government’s decision to increase fuel next month (September).

An official source said the decision to raise the price of fuel is an executive one, and doesn’t need approval of the Parliament, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting a source. The same source added subsidy on Premium and Super fuel will not be lifted even after prices have been increased. He pointed out that subsidy on ultra fuel alone will be lifted. He denied news circulating that government had promised that no decision will be made to raise the price of fuel without consulting the Parliament.
