COVID cases top 1,000

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 9, (Agencies): Kuwait said 1,002 people tested positive for coronavirus with six related deaths reported on Tuesday taking the total cases up to 172,996 as deaths increased to 975 respectively, according to the health ministry.

The number of people hospitalized with the virus currently stands at 9,310, with 96 of them in intensive care units, according to ministry spokesman Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad, who revealed that some 10,271 swab tests were conducted over the last day out of a total of 1,618,576. He went on to urge nationals and expatriates alike that abiding by health precautions, mainly, following social distancing rules, is the only way to halt the spread of the virus.

The ministry had earlier reported that some 591 more people had been cured of the virus over the past day, raising the total of those to have overcome the disease to 162,711. Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced on Tuesday that the Public Security Force (PSF) will provide all forms of security support to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and health regulations teams, through inspection tours and campaigns to implement the Council of Ministers’ decision of closing shops and commercial malls.

This support came as a quick response to the Council of Ministers’ decisions circulation at the security directorates in the county’s governorates, the Information and Media department at MoI mentioned in a press statement.

The security teams will offer the required assistance to responsible bodies between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. and to prevent any form of social gathering or rallies, to hamper the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19), it added.

The PSF allocates female officers’ teams and support security teams in each security directorate throughout the six governorates, it added. It called on citizens and expatriates to cooperate with security personnel and to inform the Ministry about any public or private gatherings, to maintain and protect public health, and combat spread of Covid-19.

In light of the strict procedures adopted by the Council of Ministers and the health authorities to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and its variants, the concerned authorities are paying special attention to tents built on or off the beaches and along the sea shores of Kuwait which now fall under tight control to prevent any gatherings irrespective whether they are on land, sea or elsewhere, reports Al-Rai daily.

The director of the Cleaning and Road Works Department at the Jahra Municipality Branch, Fahd Al-Quraifah, told the daily “the law is clear, and gathering in one place is not permitted. Therefore, everyone must cooperate with the government authorities and show their understanding of the procedures, especially since the process is temporary. In this regard, he pointed to the role of the Municipality’s monitoring teams to follow up those who venture out for leisure and and apply the laws and decisions issued by the Council of Ministers and the health authorities.
