KUWAIT CITY, Sept 1: The Criminal Court presided over by Judge Abdullah Al-Othman imposed a fine of KD 3,000 each on MP Thamer Al-Suwait and 20 others for organizing and participating in a by-election for the Al-Dhufairi tribe in the Fourth Constituency, and for violating health requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Interior along with the names of the suspects and video clips of the process, seven of them hosted elections for the subcommittees, head of the committee, and the rest of the candidates. In this regard, a legal expert told the daily, “This ruling is of the first degree. However, if the Court of Appeals supports it, then Al-Dhufairi’s membership will be susceptible for revocation.”

He added that this matter applies to other MPs. Earlier, the Public Prosecution had released the accused on a bail of KD 1,000 each. They were accused of calling for by-elections, and organizing and participating in them, prior to the date set for the 2020 National Assembly elections, in order to choose one of the members of the tribe to run for membership in the National Assembly. The Public Prosecution also charged them with violating the health requirements set by the Ministry of Health due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The defendants denied all charges leveled against them.
