Court acquits man accused of blackmail, theft & battery – Youth found not guilty

KUWAIT CITY, May 20: The Criminal Court presided over by Judge Mohammad Ghazi Al-Mutairi acquitted a Kuwaiti citizen accused of robbery, blackmail and battery against a woman. According to the case file, the plaintiff accused the defendant of threatening her, hitting her and robbing her of some of her possessions. During interrogations, the defendant denied the accusations. During the court session, the defense counsel lawyer Bushra Al-Hindal stressed that the allegations against her client are malicious. She explained that her client lent the plaintiff a sum of money and she had signed a receipt to prove she received the money. However, she later raised such allegations against him with the aim of blackmailing him so that he will stop asking her to return the money. Her client refused to give in to her blackmail. Lawyer Al-Hindal revealed that the incident occurred two months before the allegations were raised against her client.

‘Not guilty’: The Court of Appeals cancelled the verdict issued by a lower court which sentenced a Bedoun youth to three-year imprisonment for possessing drugs. The court instead acquitted him. According to the case file, the arresting officer was on routine patrol duty when he stopped a vehicle that committed a traffic violation. After he noticed the nervousness of the driver and his companion, he asked for their civil IDs but they said they did not have any identification documents. The officer searched them and found a sachet containing a white substance, suspected to be drugs, inside the pocket of one of them. The suspect was arrested. He was referred to the concerned authorities after it was discovered that the white substance was methamphetamine. During the court session, the defense counsel Lawyer Yousef Al- Shimmari stressed that the accusation against his client is malicious. He faulted the arrest and search procedures followed by the officer and insisted that his client was not caught red-handed.

Case adjourned: The Criminal Court adjourned until June 2, 2016 the hearing on a State security case fi led against Salem Al-Dousary, a Kuwaiti nicknamed ‘Abu Rafat’, for his Snapchat posts which were deemed offensive to HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the State of Kuwait. Abu Rafat, appeared before the court along with his lawyers who requested postponement of the hearing as they need time to collect the psychiatric reports of their client. They also asked the court to refer the accused back to the Psychiatric Hospital to complete his treatment and release him on bail. Abu Rafat affirmed in front of the judge that he will not repeat what he has done saying he was not in his senses when he did it. He claimed some Iraqis enticed him to carry out the act by financing him and giving him intoxicants which prompted him to do it. He is said to be suffering from mental illness and he is not taking medicines. Previously, the judge ordered release of Abu Rafat on KD 1,000 bail and imposed a travel ban on him.
