‘Kuwait known for generosity’

KUWAIT CITY, March 18: In line with the exceptional circumstances that Kuwait is going through due to the emergence of the new coronavirus, some MPs and citizens have been demanding on social media to postpone all consumer loan and insurance payments of citizens and expatriates until end of the crisis, reports Al-Anba daily.

The daily met a number of citizens and expatriates who made the aforementioned demands. They unanimously said, “Based on the national duty under these exceptional circumstances and in light of this global epidemic, the government should work on postponing the monthly deductions until end of the crisis”.

In this regard, Abdul Mohsen Al-Turiji said, “In light of this crisis, we see government efforts ongoing in full and well. We hope the responsible authorities will follow the example of some Kuwaiti companies, institutions and business owners who delayed the payment of rents of real estates and stores for a period of three months as a matter of cooperation for passing this crisis”.

In corroboration, Abdulaziz Al-Zayer said, “We need to combine all efforts to deal with this crisis. Such initiatives ease the burden of citizens and make them financially secure at this time without the need for seeking help from anyone, as well as comfort them mentally. Postponing the installments until the end of the crisis will save citizens a lot of money that they can save or use for their needs”.

Also, Khaled Sadiq said, “Citizens and expatriates need an official decision for the postponement of installment payments of consumer loans. This will alleviate the anguish of many. The current circumstances require all of us to buy food supplies, sterilizers and other supplies. The people of Kuwait have been doing good deeds since ancient times”.

Contributing to the debate, Jamal Al-Wuhaib affirmed that he supports the proposal to postpone the payment of loans and installments for citizens and expatriates. He said, “The current crises will harm ordinary citizens and those with limited income. Postponing the payment of installments will serve as a kind of reassurance to the citizens and expatriates, because many people, even before the coronavirus crisis, have been suffering from debts and premiums with increase in the expenses”.

Al-Wuhaib stressed that this is an opportunity for the government to help citizens in these difficult circumstances, especially since the government has been proactive in lending a helping hand, so citizens deserve this initiative. Furthermore, Suleiman Ibrahim insisted that the burdens on Kuwaiti families, given the increase in their expenses during this period, especially since they are large in number, need to be reduced in any way including delaying the payment of consumer premiums for a period of at least three months.

He added, “The head of the family falls under the pressure of many premiums, given the high standard of living and the high prices of basic and supplementary materials”.

In addition, Saleh Muhammad said he recalls the period of the brutal Iraqi occupation, adding that the government’s directives at that time, which helped many of the people of Kuwait, dropped many obligations and compensated the relevant authorities in this field, deserved appreciation. He said hopes the current government will also take the same approach and direct it to relieve the citizens.

Muhammad added, “Kuwait is known for its generosity and giving. Its assistance and grants have blessed many people in the world. So, will the country hold back on this request, as we are its children and citizens? We are awaiting a quick decision in this regard so that pressure on us does not increase, especially since many of us have children and siblings who study abroad and whose circumstances are also difficult”.
