KUWAIT CITY, Feb 11: The Criminal Court referred to the panel of experts the case involving 87 people charged with embezzlement of public funds through the Manpower and Government Restructuring Program’s financial aid. Case files indicate the Public Prosecution leveled embezzlement charges, accusing the 87 defendants of registering dummy names under a local company, through which they received the government’s financial aid illegally and gave the owner of the company a small portion of what they received. The male defendants denied the charges, whereas the female defendants admitted to have been working as secretaries and advertisement agents, although some of them claimed they haven’t been reporting to work due to maintenance work in the company where they were registered, given that the maintenance continued for six months.

Detective held: The Misdemeanor Court ordered detention of a detective assigned in the Ministry of Interior for three months with hard labor and fined him KD 2,000 for insulting Brigadier AbdulRahman Al-Suhail. Case files indicate the detective posted statements deemed offensive to Al-Suhail on his Twitter account.

Ex-MP acquitted: The Misdemeanor Court of Appeals canceled the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance, which sentenced former MP Lawyer Khalid Al- Shatti to one-year imprisonment with hard labor for making a sarcastic statement about a religious sect by objecting to its rituals. The court instead acquitted the defendant. Lawyer Al-Shatti was represented in the court by a team of lawyers including Jalil Al-Tabbakh, Abdulmohsen Al-Qattan, Mohammad Khuraebit and Hussein Al-Khashawi. The defense team pleaded on behalf of their client, stressing that he did not harbor any criminal intention. They explained that their client was referring to DAESH in his blogs and the investigation officer corroborated this in his report. They affirmed that Al-Shatti has respect for the Sunni sect and that most of his friends belong to that sect.

Order nullified: The third administrative sector of the Court of First Instance nullified a decision issued by the State Minister for Municipal Affairs, which denied a comptroller from taking up the position of the director of a department. The court instead ordered to grant the official compensation worth KD 2,000 for moral and financial damages. The plaintiff defense team Lawyer Dr Obaid Al-Enezi, Lawyer Ahmad Al-Enezi and Lawyer Adel Al-Thufairi presented documents to substantiate that the decision was in contrary to the law. They declared that it contravenes the Civil Service Commission’s Decision No. 18/2011, which stipulates equal opportunity
