KUWAIT CITY, Feb 21: Director of Environment Public Authority (EPA) Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah has said the upcoming month will be witness to intensive campaigns by the authority in pursuit of the violators of environment law, in coordination with Ministry of Interior and the Environment Police, reports Al-Qabas daily.

He added EPA currently works with over 45 environment police officers who closely cooperate with concerned officers in the ministry to arrest and refer violators to the Public Prosecution for necessary legal measures. With regard to the beach cleaning campaign EPA launched from Kuwait Towers recently in cooperation with Kuwait Diving Team and the Filipino community in Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah noted the drive focused on spreading awareness among members of the Kuwaiti society to preserve the environment, indicating the sector will coordinate with the Municipality on its beach cleaning drives. Meanwhile, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah bid all citizens and expatriates to keep the flag of Kuwait high during the National Days celebrations. He also urged the general public to desist from discarding the flag on pavements, as it is the symbol of the nation.

For his part, Head of Kuwait Volunteer Foundation and Kuwait Diving Team Waleed Al-Fadhel said a panel was formed recently for all communities in the country to take part in the voluntary campaigns for cleaning beaches. In another development, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ahmad disclosed that the Municipality disposes of an estimated 50 million cubic meters of waste in 16 landfills that are not capable of containing the fill up, reports Al-Rai daily. He considered waste to be a major problem which the Kuwaiti society has been battling for many years, and saw the need to look at the sites of landfills—in view of the fact that they are in close proximity to new residential areas. He shed light on an interview with the daily in relation to the crisis of used tires, adding EPA is currently studying the possibility of handling the tires in an appropriate manner without causing harm to the Kuwaiti environment.

He emphasized law will be applied strictly on the violators of environment law, particularly those who discard used tires in places that are not allotted for such purpose. On the measures implemented against those who are not committed to the law that bans fishing in Kuwait Bay, he said about three or five related cases are referred to the Public Prosecution daily by Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR). He further said measures are in place to deal with drainage water thrown into Kuwait Bay, adding the plan will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works to protect the fish resource. As for the law that prohibits smoking in public places, he noted an official letter was dispatched to all commercial complexes to put guidance notices against smoking; otherwise violators will fall under the clutches of law
