KUWAIT CITY, June 15: Personnel from the General Department for Drugs have arrested a Syrian, identified as Thamer Mohammed for smuggling into the country one million Captagon tablets with a street value of about KD three million, says a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior.

The press release said the arrest came following a tip-off from a police agent that a van imported from an European country and specially built with secret compartments to hide the narcotics was about to enter the country.

Police reportedly kept a watch at the Shuwaikh Port but the vehicle failed to show up. However, acting on this information and after conducting intensive investigations, police took into custody the Syrian who was living in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and during interrogation he admitted to smuggling the narcotics into the country.

He also said it was not the first time. Thamer then took police to the new van and after carefully dismantling the vehicle police came out with 49 bags of narcotics.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior Lieutenant-General Suleiman Al-Fahd during his visit to the General Department for Drugs Control praised the efforts of the securitymen. He said, the security personnel are dedicated in their duty to protect the homeland and the safety of citizens and residents by combating the scourge of drugs and eliminate drug traffickers by all means.

He was received at the department by Major-General Abdul Hamid Al-Awadhi, Interior Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for Criminal Security Affairs, Major-General Shihab Al-Shimmari, Director-General of the General Department of Criminal Evidences, Acting Director-General of the General Department for Drugs Control, Colonel Walid Al-Dariei, and a number of senior officers of the criminal security affairs sector. Al-Fahd thanked the Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid Al-Sabah for his support for the security personnel to conduct proactive and pre-emptive strikes against international criminals
