KUWAIT CITY, Dec 11: Officials announced an integrated plan to care for people suffering from sclerosis in Kuwait, whose number has risen to 2,500. This is a large number compared to the other countries in the region, reports Al-Qabas daily. This was highlighted during the event titled “Challenges and Future Prospects” organized by the Kuwait Association for Patients with Multiple Sclerosis held last Sunday, coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with the cooperation of the Public Authority for Disabled Affairs (PADA) and under the auspices of the Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi.

Officials indicated that cases are increasing, and the best medicines are being sought, in addition to educating the community about the nature of the disease. On the sidelines of the event, Assistant Undersecretary for External Health Services Affairs Dr. Youssef Al-Tamar, who was representing the Minister of Health, said the association contributes to following up the conditions of its patients and presenting their problems, which is in the interest of developing health services and improving their performance. He stressed that the Ministry of Health, represented by Minister Ahmad Al-Awadhi, is very interested in such issues and in the work of associations specialized in health affairs, especially those related to persons with disabilities.

Dr. Al-Tamar expressed appreciation for the remarkable efforts of the association in researching and caring for the medical and educational field, especially in searching for the best medicines. He highlighted the initiative of educating students through its cooperation with the Ministry of Education, which is represented by providing a topic for defining the disease.

Meanwhile, the acting Director of PADA Hanadi Al- Mabelish expressed appreciation for the fruitful cooperation between the authority and the Ministry of Health in presenting a study on the number of patients suffering from sclerosis in the country, especially with the escalation of cases, as it has reached about 2,500 patients, which is a huge rate compared to the region. She stressed that participation in such events, in conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, opens up broad horizons for further knowledge and awareness of this disease and other diseases, especially in receiving knowledge about the latest statistics, in addition to research in the pharmaceutical field, and communication with doctors and specialists to discuss and determine the type of disability and measure its severity.

Al-Mabilish highlighted the authority’s cooperation with the Committee for Persons with Disabilities in the National Assembly with the aim of highlighting the needs of the stakeholders, activating the articles of the law related to them with their various disabilities, and examining the reasons that led to the disability. She wished safety for all especially the disabled with the hope that the latter will receive full care and attention. In addition, the President of the association Yousef Al- Kandari affirmed the association’s keenness to involve its members in such an event to highlight the disease and activate the role of patients in society.

Al-Kandari said, “In addition to the educational aspect, the association seeks to provide a suitable environment for all sclerosis patients. It thus takes the initiative to communicate with those concerned to contribute to raising their issues.” He highlighted the association’s cooperation with the Ministry of Education, which resulted in the inclusion of lessons about this disease in its curricula, which will contribute to raising awareness in society. Al-Kandari stressed that the efforts made by the association’s employees have made great strides in several areas related to this disease. He said he hopes that a headquarters that gathers sclerosis patients will be established in the future under the roof of the association.
