4,514 expatriates out of 4,915 leave shelter in 13 months: PAM

KUWAIT CITY, May 10: Head of Expatriate Shelter Affairs at Public Authority for Manpower Falah Al-Mutairi revealed that the shelter received a total of 4,915 expatriates from March 2015 to March 2016. Out of these expatriates, 4,514 left the shelter after receiving psychological and social counseling while 401 of them are still at the shelter, reports Al-Qabas daily.

He revealed that the nationalities of these expatriates include Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Madagascar, Philippines, India, Senegal, Togo, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Uganda. Al-Mutairi stressed that the shelter was established in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area based on the decision of the Cabinet for helping expatriates who suffered from forced labor and other kinds of injustice.

He explained that the expatriates have to be above 20 years of age and they must present an application for being accepted in the shelter. They can either submit their applications individually, via their embassy or a police station. They must not suffer from any contagious diseases or have a criminal record.

They must also have their identification documents. In case their sponsors have their passports, the shelter intervenes in obtaining the passports. Al-Mutairi went on to explain that expatriates usually spend 2-3 weeks in the shelter after which they can decide whether to return to their homeland or find a new job in Kuwait.

In case they were physically attacked or molested, they will undergo medical examination and their case will be referred to the Public Prosecution. He affirmed that representatives from Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are present in the center to work in helping the expatriates under the supervision of Public Authority for Manpower.
