17 patients killed in hospital fire E. Indian state

NEW DELHI, Oct 17 (KUNA) — At least 17 patients were killed and tens of others injured in a fire that broke out in a Bhubaneswar private hospital in the Eastern Indian state of Odhisa.

Press Trust of India said that the fire broke out at the Sum Hospital suspected to be caused by an electric short circuit in a “dialysis ward on the first floor of the private hospital which spread to the nearby Intensive Care Unit.” Though Health Secretary of Odhisa Arati Ahuja said that “I cannot exactly say the number of persons who have died in the incident,” nearby Capital Hospital Superintendent Binod Kumar Mishra said: “We have received nine dead bodies, while five others are in very critical condition. The toll may increase.” Unit head at Amri Hospital Dr. Salil Kumar Mohanty also said that there were eight dead bodies brought there in a total of 37 injured received at his hospital.

A doctor at the Capital Hospital said: “Most of the victims were in the first floor ICU of the ill-fated Sum Hospital.” Local police, fire fighters, volunteers and hospital staff engaged in a massive operation to rescue 500 patients admitted there and trapped in the building.
