KUWAIT CITY, Oct 20: 180 nations across the world celebrated Peace day on Sunday 21 September and The British School of Kuwait were proud to be Kuwait’s representatives in making sure that the ‘One Goal, One Day’ campaign was again successful. Members of staff, fresh from an intensive period of summer training, took on the talented Under 19 youngsters at the new Bneid Al Gar Astroturf soccer pitch. After a very tight start, both sides began to get the ball to the floor and play some attractive football with Mohammed Housain and captain Fawaz al Fahad going close to breaking the deadlock. The staff superstars then began to click into gear and a handball from Eisa Al Shuaib gave Jon Storer a free kick on the edge of the area which led to a thunderous effort testing the make-up of the woodwork of the Boys’ goal. After rousing words from respective captains and large intakes of water at half time, the staff began the second half on top and eventually a well worked and heavily rehearsed throw-in led to Sven Kroger leaping salmon-like to set up a tap in for the predatory Nigel Ross to open the scoring.
It looked all over and the boys began to run out of spirit, especially when a classic team goal led to a second from Mr Junior Walters. Starting on the half way line, player of the match Miss Justine Simm threaded an intricate ball through to Junior to finish coolly in the opposite corner. But the boys awoke through Abdulaziz Al Ali and it was his sublime skills that left the staff defence for dead, picking out Ahmad Al Hamar to slot it past the hapless keeper, Mr Adam Gibson, and at 2-1 it was game on. As the minutes ticked by it looked as though the boys would equaliSe and when Mohammed Al Qallaf found himself through on goal, extra time loomed but his shot narrowly went wide and it was another win for the somewhat relieved teachers.
Handshakes were shared and three cheers given to both sides as Madame Vera Al Mutawa, Chief Executive of British International, and Paul Shropshire, Principal of The British School of Kuwait, handed the cup and medals to both teams, congratulating them on their efforts and skills. Experience won over youth on this occasion but the game was enjoyed by all players and spectators, in a match that celebrated cooperation, unity and the power of football to bring together people across the world on Peace Day.
