Govt to shut down NGOs, charities violating norms

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 23: The Cabinet has instructed Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammad Al-Afasi to cancel the licenses of non-government organizations (NGOs), charitable societies and foundations proven to have manipulated procedures for the collection of cash donations, reports Al-Jarida daily quoting sources.
Sources clarified this step will be taken after closing the accounts of many charitable societies which violated regulations for the collection of donations. Sources said the government has expressed its disappointment over the malpractices of these societies. Sources also unveiled the government’s plan to study a proposal to appoint supervisors for each charitable society to look into their financial statements.
Al-Rai daily reported that the Charitable Societies and Foundations Department has prepared a detailed report on the violations committed during the holy month of Ramadan.
Indicating the report will be forwarded to Al-Afasi after the Eid holidays, sources disclosed the report includes many files, which were arranged according to the violations committed by charitable societies or foundations.

Meanwhile, in another development, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Social Reform Society Hammoud Al-Roumi said the society is willing to send donations to Iraq and Afghanistan, but has not had donors who want to make donations to these countries, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
In a statement during a reception hosted by the society on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday, Al-Roumi hailed the role of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in organizing the process of collecting donations during the holy month of Ramadan.
He stressed that the society is keen on distributing the donations in line with the wishes of the donors, adding a part of the donations have been sent to places of worship and orphanages, as well as to poor people within and outside Kuwait.
Al-Roumi added the machinery issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in this regard helped to organize the process of collecting the donations, and dispelled any suspicions against charitable activities in the country.
He also extended his heartiest wishes to HH the Amir, HH the Crown Prince, HH the Prime Minister, the citizens, residents as well as the Arab and Islamic World on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
