‘I travelled for drugs, not attack US forces’

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 2: A 29-year-old Kuwaiti man on Monday told the Court of Appeals that he traveled to Pakistan for consuming drugs, not to carry out hostile actions against the US forces there.
This came during the hearing of an appeal filed by Abdullah Essa who has been convicted by a lower court and sentenced to five years in jail for traveling to Pakistan and undergoing training on firearms and ammunition with the aim of carrying out hostile actions against the US forces in Afghanistan.
When the judge asked the man if he had a lawyer, he replied in the negative. The court then deputized Attorney Ibrahim Al-Kandari to defend him.
Kandari requested the court for more time to photocopy case files, be briefed on circumstances related to the case, and prepare his argument. The court then adjourned its hearing until Nov 15, 2009 to listen to the argument of the defense lawyer.
The session was presided over by Judge Saleh Al-Muraishid.
