Tests prove local dairy products not infected by TB: official
KUWAIT CITY: Results of tests conducted on local dairy products showed negative on bovine tuberculosis, Chairman of the Cooperative Societies Union (CSU) Mohammed Al-Ansari told Al-Jarida.
Al-Ansari confirmed the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) took the necessary precautionary measures immediately after receiving reports that some cows at the cattle farms in Sulaibiya are infected with the disease. He said the Union met officials of Kuwait Industries Union to put in place a mechanism to contain the disease and protect the health of consumers.
On the other hand, Chairman of the Union of Fresh Dairy Products Ahmad Abdulkarim Al-Ahmad revealed the PAAAFR has agreed to slaughter 1,300 cows in Sulaibiya, which were found infected with the disease. He said the authority also granted a compensation of KD 800 per slaughtered cow to the owners.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Ardiya Cooperative Society said the co-op and its branches removed locally-produced fresh milk and its byproducts from their shelves to ensure the safety of consumers. He explained they are waiting for an official announcement from the Ministry of Health and Kuwait Municipality that these products are safe for human consumption before putting them back on the shelves.
Commenting on Al-Ansari’s criticisms on the precautionary steps taken by the cooperative societies, the chairman stressed “we put the health of consumers on top of our priorities as protecting people’s health is more important than money.”
