Urgent study, solutions needed to curb growing youth violence State Ministry for Youth Affairs forms study team

KUWAIT CITY, July 16, (KUNA): Violence has became a negative phenomenon in Kuwait in the past few years, mainly among youth, an issue which requires a thorough study to come up with the perfect solutions. The Ministry of State for Youth Affairs has launched a plan to solve this increasing problem under the title “the national plan to prevent violence in the society”, led by a number of experts from different public sector bodies. The study team includes members of the Ministry of interior, Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, Ministry of Education and Kuwait University, Assistant Undersecretary for development in the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Wednesday.

The study, initiated under orders from the Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salim Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, is focusing on reasons behind violence from the youth’s point of view, while specifying factors which spark the problem, he noted. Once the study has determined the causes of violence, it will recommend various projects and programs to solve the issue, said Al-Mutairi, noting the importance of creating urgent recommendations as well as long-term ones. The team presented a number of urgent recommendations to be immediately executed by responsible bodies, aiming to limit violence, bring awareness to youth about the dangers and consequences of such acts and allow policemen to play their role in controlling violent situations, the Assistant Undersecretary stated.

Among the study’s recommendations were increasing the numbers of security members in shopping malls, bring back the obligatory military service, allow social specialists in schools to play a bigger role with students and strictly apply the law on every individual, Al-Mutairi said. The study also suggested censorship on movies and video games encouraging violence, developing the role of media in bringing awareness towards the problem, run anti-violence advertisement campaigns and study the social and psychological background of violent individuals, he added.
Further recommendations were improving social development services centers, student councils to encourage students to solve their problems and make school activities and security media in the Ministry of Interior play a role in fighting violence, he noted.

Some reasons behind the acts of violent individuals are social isolation, lack of ability to achieve something or lack of goals in one’s life and having gone under violence by parents, Chairman of juvenile department at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor and study team member Abdullatif Al-Sanan told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
The team set some long-term projects which require legal measures to be executed including establishing an anti-violence center, an electronic anti-violence project and apply the law to protect children against violence caused by parents, Al-Sanan noted.
